Boilers Versus Water Heaters

There are many systems needed to run your home. During the warmer months you may need an AC system or a heat pump. During the cooler season, most homeowners use a furnace or air handler. Then there are washer and dryers, stoves, refrigerators…the list seems endless.

But one thing homeowners absolutely know is they want hot water. Most families have a water heater – or in some homes a boiler is used to heat the water. Have you noticed which heating system your home utilizes to heat your water? Service Experts Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing is here to help clear up any confusion about the difference between the two heating systems.

A water heater is a big tank that, yes, heats water. The heat is either generated by burning gas or by employing electricity. A typical water heater will heat the water and then hold it at that temperature until the water is used, either for a warm bath, the washing machine, or any other hot water need. As the hot water flows to where it is needed, fresh cold water enters through the bottom of the tank so it can also be heated for use across your home.

A boiler, alternatively, can heat water that is used to warm the home and provide hot water. A particular type of boiler can heat the water to the point it turns into steam. The steam heats the water for the home but can also be circulated throughout the home and create warmth through radiators. A boiler can also heat the air in a forced air heating system, or heat the floor in a radiant heating system. Boilers are very versatile heating systems that provide great comfort during the cold season. Today’s boilers are also very energy efficient.
