Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction field who endured life-altering injuries. Every year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, originally from Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a severe stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and it left his left leg seriously impaired, causing foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors were concerned that he would eventually be restricted to a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, putting financial pressure on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, an apparatus that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they were not able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.

Luckily, a specialist at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the wonderful grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
