How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays an important role as your furnace prepares to heat your space.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and tells the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Malfunctions

When your pressure switch isn’t working the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may note quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
