• No Heat. Make sure your thermostat is set to “on” and “heat.” A circuit breaker may have flipped, but in some cases it’s because the thermostat itself doesn’t work with heat pumps.
• Insufficient heat. Poorly-maintained air filters, fan and coils could reduce airflow and damage the system. Exchange the air filter once a month, avoid letting the coils and fan get dirty, and clear away yard debris collecting nearby. Your system could also be dealing with clogged ductwork, damaged valves or poor refrigeration flow.
• Cold air instead of heat. The air from your heat pump usually isn’t as warm as a forced air furnace. But if the air still seems too cold, adjust the thermostat to emergency heat and at least 5 degrees higher than the inside temperature. If you end up getting warm air, there could be an issue with your outdoor unit. Cold air means there’s probably a problem with the thermostat or air handler. The system might even have gone into defrost mode to avoid freezing. If you’ve recently seen frost or ice around the outdoor coil, the system could have a broken defroster timer or control module, or the refrigerant may be running low.
• Heat pump starts and stops often. Replace the air filter and then monitor your thermostat, as it might have to be recalibrated or it requires new batteries. When it’s cold and the heat pump is running constantly, your thermostat could be set incorrectly. Additionally, some models of heat pumps have trouble heating around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Rattling, grinding or squealing sounds. If you hear a rattling sound, you may need to tighten the cover panels.
